Dr Gabrielle Matters (Bottcher)

RGGS student 1960-1963

Gabrielle’s strong and sustained interest in educational measurement has taken her on a career path from classroom teacher (physics and chemistry) to deputy principal of an independent school; designer and analyst of assessments and university entrance ranks; lecturer, researcher, advisor to ministries in Australia and other countries; author and consultant. She has also worked in London as a chemistry editor for the World Patents Index.

Gabrielle’s extensive experience within the Queensland education sector includes senior executive roles at the Queensland Board of Studies (13 years) and the Queensland Department of Education (5 years). She was Principal Research Fellow, Assessment & Psychometric Research, at the Australian Council for Educational Research (11 years); and, until 2020, an international consultant specialising in the design and review of assessment systems spanning 16 countries.

As well as the technical aspects of assessment, her conference papers and publications relate to gender differences in achievement (the “lost boys”), “curriculum wars”, test-taking behaviour, the identification and testing of cross-curriculum skills, and the use of data to support learning.

Gabrielle is a recipient of a Centenary of Federation Medal for services to education in Queensland, issued by the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia (2001). She has also been honoured by The Australian Council for Educational Leaders, the Australian College of Educators, and, with less gravitas, The Sunday Mail’s list of Queensland’s 50 top thinkers.

Gabrielle, once Gaye Narelle Bottcher, says she had a magic life growing up in Rockhampton and will always be a Rocky girl.
