Dr Dorothy Watts AM

Dr Dorothy Jane Watts (Fisher) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia General Division in 2016 for significant service to tertiary education, particularly in the study of ancient history, as an academic, educator and author, notably of books on Roman Britain. 

Associate Professor Watts has a BA and PhD (UQ), ATCL (London), AMusA, is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators. She is currently an Honorary Reader in Classics and Ancient History in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland.

She has published a number of articles and three books on pre- and Roman Britain: Boudicca’s Heirs: Women in Early Britain (Routledge, London 2005); Religion in Late Roman Britain: Forces of Change (Routledge, London, 1998); Christians and Pagans in Roman Britain (Routledge, London 1991).

  • Tertiary teaching: Tutor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, The University of Queensland
  • Administration: Head, Department of Classics and Ancient History, The University of Queensland 1998-2002 and member of UQ Academic Board.
